Elder, a member of the Caprifoliaceae family, it’s a plant grown in the warmer parts of Europe, North America, southwest Asia, and North Africa. Flowers and berries have a long history as alternative and holistic medicine. Elderberries have also been used for preserves and many wines. Most commonly, the flowers, berries and bark of the Elder are sought after for their healing properties. This berry is a loose herb, when steeped repeatedly it becomes more effective and thicker with a syrupy consistency.
Preparation:
Use 1 teaspoon per 6-8 oz. water. Heat water to boiling. Allow to steep and cover for approximately 3-5 minutes. For more flavor or potency, allow it to steep longer. May also be poured over ice.
Elderberry- Flower healing properties increase blood flow, while bringing nutrients to cells and removing toxins, which aids in easing sickness and symptoms to promote immune health. When taken during allergy season it strengthens the upper respiratory tract and helps to reduce hayfever. Keep in mind Elderberry may also increase sweat and urination.
